Planarian Anatomy Ontology: a resource to connect data within and across experimental platforms

ABSTRACT As the planarian research community expands, need for an interoperable data organization framework tool building has become increasingly apparent. Such software would streamline annotation and enhance cross-platform cross-species searchability. We created Planarian Anatomy Ontology (PLANA), extendable relational of defined Schmidtea mediterranea (Smed) anatomical terms used in field. At publication, PLANA contains over 850 describing Smed anatomy from subcellular to system levels across all life cycle stages, intact animals regenerating body fragments. Terms other ontologies were imported into promote interoperability comparative studies. To demonstrate utility as a curation, we resources embryogenesis, including staging series molecular fate-mapping atlas, Gene Expression database, which allows retrieval variety published transcript/gene expression associated with terms. open-source built using FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reproducible) principles, our strategy continued curation versioning also provides platform community-led growth evolution this resource.
